Reading Response #1: The Hobbit Ending

This picture shows the true side of Thorin Oakenshield
his impact on all the dwarves and hobbits.
I have just finished reading The Hobbit. I haven't read the book since winter break and I decided that I needed to finish it to finally figure out what happens. After the elves showed up to confront the dwarves for a share in their wealth, a huge orc army shows up and attacks both armies. During the battle, Bilbo is struck by a weapon and is knocked out for the whole fight. When he wakes up he finds out that 3 of his dwarf friends were killed in action, but they defeated the orc army. Unfortunately, Bilbo is saddened to hear that Thorin was killed by the White orc. But before he died, he killed the White orc saving many of his companions lives. Then the book ends with Bilbo coming back to the Shire as a local hero.  A quote that I liked in the ending of the book was,

"Then Bilbo turned away, and he went by himself, and sat alone wrapped in a blanket, and, whether you believe it or not, he wept until his eyes were red and his voice was hoarse. He was a kindly little soul. Indeed it was long before he had the heart to make a joke again."

I thought this quote helped show the audience that Bilbo didn't just think of Thorin as a companion, but as a true friend. J.R.R. Tolkien did a great job by telling the audience of the true friendship between a hobbit and a dwarf. It's a very odd and unlikely bond between two individuals.

Descriptive Paragraph

Topic Discussion

The topic that I am considering to do my research on either my family or my future career choice. I'm still debating on which I would  enjoy more to research about. If I wrote about my family i would interview my aunt and my mom. They both know their family history's very well and I would also like to look into my father's side of the family. I have heard rumors about having famous people being related to. I have also heard of them meeting and interacting with famous people. I don't know much of my family history and I think it would be interesting to figure out things about my family. I plan on researching my current family members and also searching online for other relevant facts. I take pride with my family history and I feel like it would be better for me to know the facts and then tell my children some day the details of the Thompson/Sellers family history.

Reflection

Reflection Post

I have been reading through these stories and many of them intrigued me. But the topics I'm most interested in were extraterrestrial topics, such as UFO's, spirits, and mythical topics. I think I can come up with a good research topic on one of these because I am interested in this very much. I am intrigued in the subjects of things that many people believe is not real or that it is just a myth. I am a believer in ghosts and aliens because I have see one or I know someone that has seen one in their lifetime. I have seen the popular Spook light located in Joplin and my aunt and uncle  lived in Roswell, New Mexico a few years back and they have told stories of them seeing strange things in the sky, then it just disappearing. I want to look into more of what we all could have possibly seen and the history behind all of these "myths".

Curing Diseases

The millennium goal that I chose to write about is the section 6 one called Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other diseases. This topic interested me more than the others because I was curious as to see how a few of the most deadly diseases are declining compared to about 15 years ago. The statistics were truly interesting and very helpful for the peers to understand. I want to be a statistician in the future and I would like to calculate these type of things for people to observe. It can help people understand this better.

When I first observed the stats I was surprised to see that most HIV infections are declining in most regions. In the bad news, it said that 1.6 million people died from AID related diseases and 210,000 children died in 2012 from AID related diseases, compared to 320,000 in 2005. It's good to see that the amount of people getting these diseases is declining. It just shows that people and scientists are figuring out medicine to help with these diseases. It's showing that many people are being saved and that many people are being treated. By looking as the stats, the amount of cases involving these diseases will decline as years go on, saving millions of lives. By finding the medicine to help cure these diseases, it could help cure other important diseases and save even more lives. I think by seeing these stats, they help show the true problem.

Article 2 Response

Something That Matters

There were many very intriguing posts, but three of them stuck out the most, starting with the post about the group of guys who experimented by giving a homeless man a pizza. They then sent out one of their guys involved and he pretended to be homeless. He then asked the homeless man for a slice and without any hesitation, the man gave him a slice, storing life in humanity once again. This post was the best to read and watch because it goes to show that any kind of person can make a difference and be kind to one another.

The other post that stuck out to me was the post about storing greatness in the new year. It described that if you take tiny steps towards your goals that it will make the year a waste for you personally. But if you don't take steps by inches, but by miles, it will make your year a great time for you personally. I agree with this because if you actually try towards your goals, you can accomplish it and make an impact.

The last post I read was the one about shopping at smaller businesses rather than bigger ones. By shopping at smaller businesses,, you can get better customer service and a better customer experience. The employees have a better understanding of the products they sell and they act nicer towards their customers. Bigger stores tend to have people who don't want to be there and tend to act different. I think that this post is true because my parents used to have a small business and they always treated their customer nicely and they specialized in what the customer actually needed.

The questions involving Mycoskie are some interesting questions. My answer to the first question is that if I didn't have to worry about money, I would spend lots of time with my friends and family. The answer for the second question would be the same with or without money. I would still want to take stats for professional sports teams because it's the job that I would enjoy for the rest of my life. The answer to the last question is what cause I would serve. I would help as many people as I could and try to help make the world a different and better place to live in.

Article 1 Response

The main points of the article are about the 7 grammar rules that everyone who writes or speaks in front of people should know to help them act more educated. The main points should help many people in the way they write. I think that these grammar rules are a good idea and I agree with what this person wrote. The topic that I struggle with the most is without a doubt verb problems. I struggle with the verbs lay and lie most of all. I usually get the two mixed up and it frustrates me. I also use me, myself, and I in the wrong context occasionally. I put my friend and me from time to time.

* I'm tired, so I need to go lay lie down.
* The fish laid lay on the counter, fileted and ready to broil.

These two examples are the perfect sentences for the mistakes that I make. I seem to always insert lay instead of lie and I always get counted off points for that mistake. After I read over the passage that I get back I can see where I went wrong. I need to read over my work more often to check and make sure that all my grammar and writing mistakes are taken care of so that I can get all the possible points possible. It's important to revise your work so that you can get a better understanding of the proper technique to write grammatically correct.
My reaction to when I make a mistake with verbs.

Superior Skydiving

The Pecha Kucha that I watched was the one called Superior Skydiving. This woman described the way she learned how to sky dive for the first time. It showed many pictures of her and her experiences of skydiving. She showed/talked about her first trying skydiving with her sister for the first time and that she loved to do it. She talked about her injury of skydiving as well as her first time doing it alone. She did a good job in describing her pictures in detail because most of them I wouldn't have known who was in the picture or what they were doing.

She did well throughout the presentation but she could improve on a few things. She stuttered a few times and during the middle of the presentation she paused for a good 5 seconds interrupting the flow of the Pecha Kucha. She also could have done  better job with her flow as well. The entire presentation was good with the pictures and they talked fairly well throughout the slide show. I noticed that the presentation was well organized and worked well. I'm not a big fan of the Pecha Kucha because I like to look on the slide show and read most my information. But this is a good way in not letting people just do that. I just need to learn to not read off the slide show. I do think I will be able to fill all 10 of my slides in the needed amount of time.
